JourneyVPN & BitTorrent

At JourneyVPN we’re committed to providing free and secure internet access to as many users around the world as possible. We envision a world where everyone can benefit from the freedom to exchange ideas and information regardless of where life may take them.

Unfortunately, BitTorrent is often used to illegally share copyrighted material in violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).

Not only is such activity on our network a violation of our terms of service, as a US-based company, we’re required to comply with the DMCA. Providing a secure VPN at no cost to users requires that we manage our infrastructure and resources wisely. Rather than deal with the steady flow of DMCA violation notices that we receive when BitTorrent is allowed on our network, we have made the decision to not support BitTorrent traffic at all.

We understand that not all BitTorrent activity is illegal. However, not supporting any BitTorrent traffic is the best way for us to ensure that our network resources are not disproportionally allocated to a small subset of our users.

If you need to use BitTorrent apps, then perhaps JourneyVPN is not the best fit for you. We encourage you to use one of the many other VPN services available.

WHAT IS BITTORRENT?

BitTorrent is a popular peer-to-peer file sharing protocol that allows users across the internet to exchange and share files without the need for a centralized server or service. BitTorrent is especially good at distributing large files. A nice feature of BitTorrent for users is that it can be difficult to block on many networks.

WHAT ARE BITTORRENT APPS?

A BitTorrent app is any mobile application (of which there are many) that can communicate and share files using the BitTorrent protocol.

WHAT ARE THE PROBLEMS WITH BITTORRENT?

BitTorrent is a protocol for exchanging files. We have no issue with protocols in general or BitTorrent in particular. The issue for us is that BitTorrent is often used to exchange copyrighted content like movies, TV/streaming shows, and music.

HOW IS TORRENT TRAFFIC HANDLED WHEN USING JOURNEYVPN?

If you use a BitTorrent app, its network traffic will bypass our VPN tunnel and use your default network connection via our Split Tunnel feature.
