What is Cross-site Tracking?

Cross-site tracking refers to the practice of tracking a user’s online activities across different websites. It involves collecting information about a user’s browsing habits, interests, and preferences to create a comprehensive profile of their interests and activities.

This data is often used by advertisers and website owners to deliver targeted ads and personalize the user experience. The process typically involves the use of cookies, which are small text files that store information about a user’s visit to a specific website. These cookies can then be accessed and shared across multiple websites to build a user’s profile.

This tracking can raise privacy concerns as users may feel their online activities are being monitored without their consent. To protect privacy, browser updates and privacy regulations are being implemented to restrict cross-site tracking practices.

Unfortunately, most VPNs, by themselves do not prevent this tracking as that would require an application level proxy that would selectively edit the data stream. However, you can take precautions such as using the private browsing mode, disabling third-party cookies, or adopting a browser extension or plugin that blocks tracking.
